Law and Governance in the Digital Era

Third annual PhD forum

Where: Amsterdam
When: This event took place on Friday, 20 November 2015

The Netherlands Institute for Law and Governance (NILG) is offering young researchers (doctoral candidates) an exceptional opportunity to exchange ideas and present their research at an international and interdisciplinary forum.

Conference theme

Our aim is to provide a forum for discussing the most fundamental challenges facing law in the digital era. The scope of the topics that will be addressed ranges from the ongoing debates dating back from the ‘early era of digitalization’ to the new emerging issues, including but not limited to:

• Copyright and digital works;
• Freedom of expression and its limits;
• Internet of things;
• Privacy and data protection;
• Consumer protection online;
• Cybercrime;
• Internet governance;
• Big Data governance;
• Net neutrality;
• Surveillance technologies.

The common, overreaching questions that we would like to raise concern the role for law in the digital era. What are the genuinely new aspects of digitalization in the legal context? How does law evolve to adapt to this changing reality? How are different conflicting interests balanced in the legal systems? In what way does digitalization affect the new modes of governance?  How to close the gap between the law and technological development? Is our legal framework still an effective one for the digital era? Who are and should be the main governance actors shaping the digital reality?

Participants are invited to submit the abstracts on digital law-related issues in their specific fields of expertise. Proposals of interdisciplinary and comparative character are encouraged.
